The year was 1936 and it was the City of Johannesburg’s jubilee year. A group of Johannesburg’s prominent citizens conceived the idea of establishing a living memorial which would serve as a reminder of Johannesburg’s 50th Jubilee and honour those who had assisted in the founding and development of the city.
